Early prognosis for osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is one of the most disabling diseases in the world. Worldwide osteoporosis will affect one in three women and one in five men. People seldom realize they suffer from osteoporosis until they have their first fracture. There are no early signs of this painful disease and many women don’t even think they could be at risk. Early intervention can dramatically decrease the risk of fractures and prevent years of unnecessary suffering.

With a single, standard X-ray image of the hand, acquired on any digital modality, it is possible to measure bone health (Bone Mineral Density, BMD). The test takes about 30 seconds to perform and is an effective way to calculate the risk for future fractures, thereby identifying people in need for further examinations, using for example DXA, or medication. Sectra OneScreen is easily fully integrated in existing workflows eliminating manual steps.

Given the efficiency of the solution and the low dose of the examination, it even enables public healthcare providers to implement population based bone health screening. For private clinics it is an easy to sell add-on service either in combination with mammography or as a separate health check-up service.

Combined with mammography

OneScreen for osteoporosis assessment is especially convenient in combination with mammography. Integrated with the mammography workflow, it is highly efficient even for high-volume screening. The hand X-ray is taken immediately after the breast images, using the same digital radiology equipment, adding about 30 seconds to the overall examination time. Thanks to the high resolution, mammography X-ray equipment is especially suitable for OneScreen analyses, enabling the highest precision possible.

Any X-ray equipment

The OneScreen service is also beneficial outside the mammography workflow, using regular X-ray equipment. Patients with, for example, a wrist fracture can get their BMD measured from the X-ray image of the fracture, if the metacarpals are included in the image. Thanks to the high reproducibility, it is also convenient to use OneScreen for monitoring BMD changes in the hand, even over short periods. This can be of interest for patients on treatment that effects bone remodeling.

Easy to get started – no capital investment

As OneScreen utilizes existing digital equipment and infrastructure there is no need for expensive investments to get started. The hand images are sent digitally to the OneScreen laboratory for analysis, and no added software installation or update is required. OneScreen is DICOM compliant and independent of the radiology IT system used

How to use Sectra OneScreen

Using Sectra online service is very simple - all you need to do is to refer the patient to a hand X-ray. Sectra will assist with any set-up needed to send images via the Internet to our service (this is a one time set-up). The analysis is automated and quality reviewed by a certified operator before the result is sent electronically to the physician.

The technology

Sectra OneScreen uses the patented DXR-technology. The three middle metacarpal bones in the hand are analyzed using Digital X-ray Radiogrammetry (DXR) technology, which performs a radiogrammetric and textural analysis to estimate the BMD. The BMD of an examined individual is compared to the DXR normative reference database1 to calculate T- and Z-scores. A T-score is a comparison with young adults of the same gender while a Z-score is a comparison with age-matched reference material. These two values assist the physician in identifying patients in the risk zone of osteoporosis. The OneScreen result is proven to predict the risk for future fractures equally well as that of peripheral or central dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
