Holly House – proves value in combining mammography and osteoporosis screening

Since 2010, women attending Holly House for regular mammography are given the offer of combining their breast examination with a bone mineral density examination of the hand, using Sectra OneScreen. Using the regular digital mammography equipment, a hand image is acquired after the mammography examination. The image is sent via a secure connection to an online lab where the bone mineral density is estimated. This information, together with knowledge of other risk factors for increased risk of fracture, can be used for osteoporosis diagnosis or to prioritize the patients in need of a more thorough examination.
Unilabs / Tumba Mammography – Stockholm Osteoporosis Prevention

Women attending screening at Tumba mammography can participate in a clinical research study on osteoporosis screening called STOP, Stockholm Osteoporosis Prevention. In combination with the mammography examination an x-ray of the woman’s hand is taken using the same modality. The bone mineral density is then estimated using Sectra’s online solution for osteoporosis assessment. A total of 10,000 women will be included in the study, which aims to obtain the predictive value of digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR), the patented technology used in Sectra’s solution. The researchers believe that this methodology can facilitate a cost-effective primary screening of osteoporosis.
Volvat Medical Center – Private clinic offers combined mammography and osteoporosis screening

Volvat Medical Center stopped using a separate peripheral BMD scanner when they realized how efficient a combined mammography and osteoporosis workflow is. The procedure only adds about 30 seconds to the overall mammography examination. After the four breast images, an X-ray image of the hand is taken at the same modality. The hand image is sent to Sectra’s online lab for analysis. Women with low bone mass are further investigated regarding risk factors for osteoporosis and if necessary, medical treatment is started. The treatment can prevent the first fracture – which would otherwise be the first indication of osteoporosis.
